In a surprising yet significant move, the St. Louis Cardinals have re-signed outfielder Tyler O’Neill, keeping the powerful veteran in the fold for the 2025 season. This decision comes after a series of roster shake-ups and marked a pivotal moment in the Cardinals’ commitment to building a competitive team.
General Manager John Mozeliak, who has long been a fan of O’Neill’s potential, expressed his excitement in a statement, emphasizing that the team simply could not afford to lose the Canadian-born slugger.
“Tyler brings more than just power to this lineup — he brings leadership, versatility, and a sense of commitment that we desperately need as we push forward,” said Mozeliak. “We’ve been through a lot of transitions this offseason, and we feel this move gives us a balance of experience and youth. Tyler has a unique skill set that we need to tap into as we chase another playoff appearance.”
Tyler O’Neill
O’Neill, who had been a core part of the team’s outfield for several years, had faced trade rumors and speculation throughout the offseason, especially after a series of injury-plagued seasons. However, his impressive defensive abilities and game-changing bat were too valuable for the Cardinals to part with, even as they look toward future development.
In 2024, O’Neill hit .257 with 24 home runs and 72 RBIs, showing glimpses of the elite production he’s capable of when healthy. His athleticism in the field and strong arm in right field add depth to the Cardinals’ defense, an area they are eager to strengthen heading into the season.
While many expected a major overhaul in the Cardinals’ outfield, O’Neill’s re-signing signals that the front office believes in his ability to bounce back and contribute significantly in 2025. Mozeliak further emphasized that O’Neill is a “pillar” for the team moving forward and will play an essential role in their strategy to contend this year.
“We know what he’s capable of,” Mozeliak added. “We’re confident that with a healthy, motivated Tyler O’Neill, this lineup becomes much more dangerous.”
This deal secures the 28-year-old O’Neill’s place in St. Louis for the upcoming season, providing the team with much-needed consistency as they continue to adjust their roster for both the present and future.
