Demotion Incoming: Reds Pitcher Ignites Firestorm After Unforgivable Blunder on Botched Bunt Play, Fans Demand Immediate Roster Shake-Up

Yosver Zulueta was recently promoted to the Cincinnati Reds, but after a critical error in Saturday’s game against the Washington Nationals, fans are already calling for his return to the minors.

During the seventh inning with one out and a runner on third, Nationals center fielder Jacob Young laid down a bunt after previously signaling a squeeze play. Zulueta fielded the ball but opted to throw to first base instead of attempting to get the lead runner at home. The decision allowed a run to score — and the Great American Ball Park crowd let their frustration be known.

Many fans and both Reds broadcasters, John Sadak and Barry Larkin, questioned Zulueta’s decision. Larkin remarked, “I think Zulueta could’ve easily tossed this ball, with his glove, to Tyler Stephenson,” noting the pitcher appeared to have no intent of preventing the run.

Though the Nationals ultimately won 11-6 and Zulueta’s misplay wasn’t the sole cause of the loss, the mental lapse was glaring. With the Reds emphasizing accountability in recent roster decisions, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Zulueta is optioned back to Triple-A ahead of Sunday’s series finale.

However, MLB rules complicate a potential swap — recently optioned pitchers Lyon Richardson and Alexis Díaz must remain in the minors for 15 days unless an injury arises. That leaves Sam Moll, currently rehabbing in Triple-A, as the most likely candidate to replace Zulueta if a move is made.
