Reds Rookie Tyler Callihan’s Promising Start Takes a Hit: Out at Least Two Months After Injury on Daring Dive in Just His Fourth MLB Game

ATLANTA — Cincinnati Reds rookie left fielder Tyler Callihan will be sidelined for a minimum of two months after undergoing surgery Tuesday to repair a fractured left forearm, an injury he sustained while attempting a sliding catch during Monday night’s game against the Braves.

Manager Terry Francona confirmed that Callihan will be shut down from all baseball activities for six to eight weeks but hasn’t been ruled out for a return later this season.

“It’s actually kind of remarkable,” Francona said, noting that the procedure in Cincinnati went exactly as planned.

Callihan’s injury occurred when his diving effort to make a catch in left field turned into an inside-the-park home run for Atlanta’s Matt Olson, contributing to the Reds’ 4-0 defeat.

The 23-year-old was appearing in just his fourth MLB game after making his debut last week.

On Tuesday, the Reds placed Callihan on the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, the team sent pitcher Yosver Zulueta to Triple-A Louisville while recalling outfielder Jacob Hurtubise and right-hander Lyon Richardson.
