BOOST: Cincinnati Reds Take Bold Draft Gamble on High School Star with Elite Offensive Tools but Defensive Future in Question

As the 2025 MLB Draft approaches, the Cincinnati Reds appear ready to roll the dice on one of the most talked-about high school prospects in the country—JoJo Parker, a power-hitting infielder from Purvis, Mississippi. In the latest mock draft by MLB Insider Jim Callis, the Reds are projected to select Parker with the No. 12 overall pick, signaling their willingness to prioritize raw upside over positional certainty.

Parker, who is currently committed to Mississippi State, is widely regarded as one of the top offensive talents among high school players. Scouts rave about his bat speed, plate discipline, and ability to drive the ball to all fields. He’s viewed as a potential middle-of-the-order presence at the next level—a type of player the Reds have sought to develop in recent years.

However, Parker’s future defensively is far less certain.

While he currently plays shortstop, there’s growing concern among scouts about whether he’ll be able to stick at the position long term. His arm strength is considered solid, but his range and overall athleticism are viewed as average. Most evaluators believe he may eventually transition to third base or even an outfield corner, depending on how his body develops and how well his glove progresses.

The Reds, who have invested heavily in young talent over the past several drafts, may see Parker as a high-risk, high-reward addition to their rebuilding roster. With the franchise placing a renewed emphasis on offensive firepower at all levels, Parker’s bat could outweigh concerns about where he ultimately plays in the field.

Still, the selection comes with some uncertainty. Because of his college commitment and the rise of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities in the NCAA, the Reds would likely need to offer a compelling signing bonus to persuade Parker to forgo his college career.

If they do manage to land him, Cincinnati would add another promising name to their growing list of blue-chip prospects, potentially positioning themselves for long-term success—if Parker can live up to the hype.
