Cardinals Rumors: All-Star Closer Emerges as Top Trade Deadline Target Amid Struggles, Contract Uncertainty, and Rising Interest from Contenders

Though the trade deadline is still months away, the St. Louis Cardinals are once again generating buzz—this time around their All-Star closer, Ryan Helsley. According to a report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the 29-year-old flamethrower is “likely” to be moved before July 31, sparking growing interest from contenders like the Phillies and Diamondbacks.

It’s no surprise Helsley is drawing attention. The right-hander led the National League with 49 saves last season, posting a stellar 2.45 ERA and earning NL Reliever of the Year honors. Since taking over the closer role in 2022, he’s delivered elite production, pairing a blazing 100-mph fastball with a refined curveball. Over the past three seasons, Helsley boasts a 1.83 ERA and 83 saves, while striking out nearly 35% of opposing hitters—ranking among the league’s best in multiple categories.

Despite interest this past winter from teams such as Toronto and Arizona, the Cardinals chose not to move Helsley. But with a disappointing 12-15 start to the season and no signs of a long-term extension in the works, the front office may be more willing to part ways with their star reliever.

Helsley’s 2025 campaign has gotten off to a slower start—posting a 4.09 ERA over 11 innings with 10 strikeouts and eight walks—but teams in need of bullpen help remain intrigued. The Phillies, in particular, are looking for stability after offseason addition Jordan Romano has struggled with a 13.50 ERA in 9 1/3 innings. The Diamondbacks, still in need of a closer after A.J. Puk landed on the IL, could also revisit trade talks.

However, potential suitors aren’t eager to part with top prospects. Nightengale notes Philadelphia has already ruled out including prized young arms Andrew Painter or Aidan Miller in any deal.

If St. Louis does pull the trigger, it would signal a subtle shift toward retooling. After holding off on major moves this offseason, including keeping Helsley and Nolan Arenado, the team may now be more open to shaking things up as the trade deadline nears.
