In a thrilling development for the Volunteers faithful, former Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs is set to return to Knoxville in a special Quarterback Mentorship role after his recent stint in the NFL. The beloved signal-caller, who became a fan favorite for both his playmaking ability and leadership, is preparing to help guide the next generation of quarterbacks on Rocky Top.
Dobbs, who has spent time with several NFL teams including the Steelers, Titans, and Vikings, will now bring his wealth of experience back to Neyland Stadium—this time from the sidelines.
“This place shaped me as a player and as a person,” Dobbs said. “Now, I’m excited to help shape the future of Tennessee football, especially at the quarterback position.”
From 2013 to 2016, Dobbs was a cornerstone of the Volunteers’ offense, earning a reputation for clutch performances, academic excellence, and unmatched poise under pressure. His return comes at a pivotal moment, as the Vols aim to reestablish themselves among the SEC’s elite under head coach Josh Heupel.

Dobbs’ role will focus on mentoring quarterbacks, improving their fundamentals, boosting confidence, and instilling the mental toughness that made him one of the most respected QBs in recent program history. While not a formal coaching position, his presence in the quarterback room is expected to make an immediate impact.
Coach Heupel praised the move, saying, “Josh is the embodiment of Tennessee football. He knows what it takes to lead here, and our guys are going to learn a lot just by being around him.”
While Dobbs’ NFL career isn’t officially over, this return to Knoxville is more than a symbolic gesture—it’s a renewed commitment to the Volunteer legacy. And for fans at Rocky Top, it’s a reunion worth celebrating.
