BREAKING: Reds Pull the Plug on Young Starter Before First Pitch, Delivering a Harsh but Necessary Reality Check About Big League Readiness

Cincinnati Reds rookie pitcher Chase Petty just got a reality check — and it likely stung.

Slated to start Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians, Petty was unexpectedly scratched in favor of reliever Brent Suter. Reds manager Terry Francona initially planned to bring Petty in later, but that moment never came — and for good reason.

The Reds clearly aren’t confident in Petty’s ability to handle major league hitters just yet. Saturday’s game remained close throughout, and at no point did the situation seem safe enough to risk turning things over to the inexperienced right-hander.

Petty, just 22, has had two chances on the big league stage and struggled both times. In his MLB debut, he lasted only 2⅓ innings against the Cardinals. His second start wasn’t any better — walking six Astros and throwing 90 pitches in just three innings. One thing is clear: Petty’s talent is raw, but he’s not ready.

That doesn’t mean Petty can’t eventually become a quality starter. But potential alone doesn’t win games, and with the Reds trying to stay competitive, Francona can’t afford to gamble on unproven arms.

Instead, Francona handed the ball to fellow rookie Luis Mey in a critical moment — and Mey delivered. After Will Benson’s homer tied the game in the fifth, Mey entered in the sixth and promptly mowed down José Ramírez, Kyle Manzardo, and Carlos Santana in order.

Petty, meanwhile, may be headed back to Triple-A Louisville before Sunday’s game. With the bullpen taxed, Francona could call up a fresh arm like Sam Moll or Ian Gibaut, both of whom are on rehab assignments.

Andrew Abbott is set to pitch Sunday’s finale, with Nick Lodolo, Nick Martinez, and Brady Singer lined up for the Pirates series. A Thursday off-day allows Francona to keep Abbott on regular rest for the Cubs next Friday, and Hunter Greene’s return appears imminent.

As for Petty, Saturday may have been a humbling experience — but it could also be the wake-up call he needs to get back on track. Another opportunity will come. The question is: will he be ready next time?
