Just weeks after a stunning release by the Kansas City Royals, veteran outfielder Hunter Renfroe is headed back to a familiar clubhouse — this time rekindling his journey with the Cincinnati Reds, a team he briefly suited up for in 2023. His return, officially set for June 1, comes at a crucial moment as the Reds seek an offensive spark to bolster their playoff hopes in a tightly contested National League Central.
Renfroe, 33, was designated for assignment by the Royals following a rough start to the 2025 season. In 35 games, he slashed just .182/.241/.242, with no home runs and four RBIs — numbers well below his career standards. The release sent shockwaves around the league, especially considering Renfroe’s proven ability to deliver consistent power from the right side of the plate.
Enter Cincinnati — a team that knows firsthand what Renfroe is capable of.
Though his 2023 stint with the Reds was short-lived, it was marked by moments of promise and professionalism. The front office, impressed with his clubhouse presence and work ethic, didn’t hesitate to reach out once he became available. With the offense in need of depth and experience, the Reds are banking on a midseason resurgence from a veteran with a proven track record.
“Hunter’s a guy who’s always had a strong presence in the batter’s box and in the clubhouse,” said Reds GM Nick Krall. “We believe he still has something left in the tank, and we’re excited to bring him back into the fold at a time when his leadership and bat could really make a difference.”
Renfroe is expected to join the active roster ahead of the Reds’ home series against the Chicago Cubs starting June 1. With several young players still adjusting to big-league pitching, Renfroe’s presence could not only bring pop to the lineup but also mentorship to the outfield corps.
Fans may remember Renfroe’s 2021 season with Boston, where he hit 31 home runs and drove in 96 RBIs while flashing one of the strongest outfield arms in baseball. Though he’s bounced around in recent years — suiting up for eight teams since 2017 — he still holds a career .776 OPS and is widely respected as a dangerous bat when he finds his rhythm.
Renfroe shared his excitement about the reunion in a heartfelt social media post.
“Back in Cincy. Unfinished business. Let’s go to work,” he wrote.
For the Reds, it’s a low-risk, high-reward move that could pay off big as the summer stretch begins. If Renfroe can recapture even a portion of his prior form, the Reds will have added a major piece without giving up any prospects or payroll flexibility.
The question now becomes: Can this reunion spark the turnaround both parties are hoping for?
Fans will find out soon, as Hunter Renfroe gears up to make his return to Great American Ball Park — and perhaps write one of the season’s most unexpected comeback stories.
