Cubs’ Long-Term Plans Take a Hit as Fan-Favorite Star Rejects Contract Extension Offer, with Ken Rosenthal Backing the Bold Decision to Bet on Himself

In a move that could have major implications for the future of the Chicago Cubs, star center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has officially turned down a contract extension offer from the team. The offer, which sources say was presented earlier this month, aimed to secure Crow-Armstrong’s services well beyond his current rookie deal—but the 22-year-old outfielder has decided to bet on himself instead.

Crow-Armstrong’s decision comes during a breakout 2025 season in which he has emerged as one of the Cubs’ most dynamic players, both at the plate and in the field. His speed, defense, and improving offensive production have quickly made him a fan favorite and a central figure in Chicago’s resurgence.

Following the news of the declined extension, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal voiced his full support for the young outfielder’s decision.

“If I’m Pete Crow-Armstrong, I’m not signing anything right now,” Rosenthal said during an appearance on Foul Territory. “I can’t imagine the Cubs putting forth an offer that makes it worth giving up his free agency years. His value is climbing by the day.”

The extension would have reportedly bought out multiple arbitration years and delayed Crow-Armstrong’s free agency, but ultimately didn’t meet the threshold the young star and his camp were comfortable with. Given his rapid rise and the market value of elite outfielders, Crow-Armstrong appears confident that his long-term worth will only increase.

For the Cubs, the rejection is a significant development. After adding All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker in a bold offseason trade, the organization was hopeful it could lock up both Tucker and Crow-Armstrong as franchise cornerstones. With Tucker set to hit free agency soon and Crow-Armstrong declining an early deal, the front office now faces the prospect of trying to keep a winning core intact without long-term assurances.

Crow-Armstrong, for his part, has shown no signs of being distracted by contract matters. He continues to perform at a high level, helping power the Cubs to one of the best records in the National League. But with his value rising, and his decision now public, the Cubs may face stiffer competition and a heftier price tag if they revisit negotiations in the future.

One thing is certain: Pete Crow-Armstrong is betting big on his future—and so far, it’s hard to argue with the results.
