BREAKING: Rangers Go Big at No. 9 — Texas Snags LSU’s Biggest Ace in 2025 MLB Draft

June 1, 2025 — Arlington, TX

The Texas Rangers didn’t hesitate when their name was called with the ninth overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. In a move that could pay off for years to come, the defending AL champs selected LSU left-handed ace Kade Anderson, one of the most polished college arms in the country.

Anderson dominated throughout his collegiate career with the Tigers, finishing the 2025 season with a 3.68 ERA and 204 strikeouts in just over 121 innings. He led the SEC in strikeouts and showcased the kind of mound presence that’s hard to ignore—making him a top-10 prospect on nearly every draft board.

“We feel like we got a frontline starter,” Rangers scouting director Kip Fagg said. “Kade checks every box—velocity, command, poise, and durability. He’s battle-tested in the SEC and knows how to win.”

Armed with a mid-90s fastball, a sharp curveball, a deceptive slider, and a well-developed changeup, Anderson boasts a four-pitch mix that has scouts projecting him as a future No. 2 starter or better. His smooth, repeatable delivery and ability to pound the strike zone made him stand out among a strong class of college pitchers.

Texas has built a reputation in recent drafts for betting on elite arms, and Anderson fits that mold perfectly. His mix of power and finesse gives the Rangers another high-upside arm to develop alongside a promising young pitching core.

“He competes like a pro and has the tools to match,” said manager Bruce Bochy. “You can tell he’s been in big games. That kind of experience matters.”

Anderson, who underwent Tommy John surgery in high school, has since shown no signs of durability issues. His clean mechanics and ability to handle pressure situations have only boosted his stock since returning stronger than ever.

The Rangers believe Anderson could move quickly through the minor league system, possibly reaching the big leagues as early as late 2026 if his development stays on track.

With this pick, Texas continues to prioritize pitching depth—something they believe is crucial for sustained success in the AL West.
