The St. Louis Cardinals have officially reintroduced a six-man rotation for the grueling month of June—and this time, top pitching prospect Michael McGreevy is firmly in the mix. The team confirmed the decision Tuesday morning, marking a bold move aimed at managing pitcher workloads and sustaining their recent success during an intense stretch of 28 games in 29 days.
McGreevy, 24, is set to start later this week, having been recalled from Triple-A Memphis after dominating at the minor league level. The right-hander posted a 3.02 ERA with 54 strikeouts over 50.2 innings in 10 starts, and team officials believe he’s ready to step in and contribute right away.
“Michael’s earned his opportunity,” said Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol. “We’re going into a stretch that’s going to test our depth, and adding him gives us a better chance to stay sharp without overextending anyone.”
Instead of returning Steven Matz to the rotation, the Cardinals have opted to keep the veteran lefty in the bullpen—where he’s been thriving. Matz has quietly become one of the team’s most valuable relief arms, compiling a 2.16 ERA across 33.1 innings, including high-leverage appearances and long relief outings.
“This is about maximizing our pitching staff,” said President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak. “Steven has done everything we’ve asked out of the bullpen and more. Right now, his impact is greatest in that role, and Michael gives us a fresh, capable arm in the rotation.”
McGreevy made one relief appearance for St. Louis earlier this season, tossing 5.2 innings of one-hit ball against the Mets. In five career big-league appearances, he owns a stellar 1.57 ERA.
With the revamped rotation, the Cardinals are hoping to avoid fatigue and keep their pitchers healthy while capitalizing on the team’s newfound momentum. After a red-hot 19–8 run in May, expectations have shifted—from rebuilding to legitimate playoff contenders. The front office clearly recognizes that a strong June could cement their status as a postseason threat.
McGreevy is scheduled to start this Friday against the Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium. If all goes well, he could make as many as five starts before the All-Star break.
“We’re not easing him in,” Marmol said. “He’s here to compete—and to help us win.”
