Cardinals Predicted to Bring Lefty Flamethrower to St. Louis — Set to Resume July 20, 2025
The St. Louis Cardinals appear poised to land a high-upside pitcher in the upcoming MLB Draft — and a top college lefty is emerging as a likely target.
With the 2025 MLB Draft beginning on July 13, the Cardinals hold the No. 5 overall pick and are in a strong position to grab one of the top players on the board. Though their system could use an injection of pitching depth, it’s unclear which direction they’ll ultimately take.
A major factor in that decision is the looming leadership change. Chaim Bloom, who led the Red Sox’s baseball operations from 2019 to 2023, is set to take over in St. Louis this offseason. For now, John Mozeliak remains at the helm. Whether Bloom will influence the selection or Mozeliak will make the call himself is still unknown — though a joint effort is possible.
Regardless of who makes the pick, Baseball America’s Carlos Collazo believes the Cardinals could opt for Jamie Arnold, a flame-throwing left-hander from Florida State.
“Jamie Arnold, LHP, Florida State,” Collazo wrote. “Range: 2–5. He’s one of the safest college arms in this class because of his stuff, strike-throwing ability, and overall track record, even if he hasn’t been quite as dominant as he was in his sophomore year.”
Jamie Arnold
Arnold has turned in a strong season with a 3.12 ERA, 110 strikeouts, and just 26 walks across 78 innings over 14 starts.
