The Cincinnati Reds have made a major statement ahead of the July 31st trade deadline by acquiring All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan from the Cleveland Guardians in a bold move to power their postseason push.
The deal sends three notable prospects to Cleveland: right-handed pitcher Chase Petty (the Reds’ No. 5 prospect), shortstop Edwin Arroyo (No. 7), and flame-throwing reliever Zach Maxwell (No. 23), signaling Cincinnati’s willingness to pay a premium for immediate impact.
Steven Kwan arrives as a transformative addition to the Reds’ outfield and lineup. Known for his elite contact hitting and defensive reliability, Kwan is slashing .292/.350/.408 on the season, with six home runs, 29 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and 39 runs scored in 88 games. He’s also drawn 30 walks while striking out just 33 times—underscoring his exceptional plate discipline.
While Cincinnati’s starting rotation is holding strong, especially with Hunter Greene working his way back from injury, the offense needed a steady presence at the top of the order. Kwan fills that role perfectly and brings postseason-level experience and poise.
The price, however, reflects Kwan’s value and remaining club control through 2027. Chase Petty, despite struggling in his big-league debut, is considered a high-upside arm. Edwin Arroyo, now in Double-A, is a skilled shortstop with strong bat-to-ball skills and speed. Zach Maxwell, a 6’6”, 275-pound right-hander with a fastball touching 103 mph, could become an immediate bullpen piece for Cleveland—especially amid rumors that closer Emmanuel Clase may be on the move.
This trade is not just about numbers—it’s a signal. The Reds are going all in. With Steven Kwan now part of the roster, Cincinnati has clearly declared its intent: end the playoff drought, make a serious run, and bring October baseball back to Great American Ball Park.
