Cale Makar, the Colorado Avalanche’s superstar defenseman and front-runner for the 2025 Norris Trophy, recently opened up about the emotional weight of being named the league’s top defenseman—not by fans or analysts, but by his fellow NHL players.
In a candid interview with FanSided’s NHL Director Steph Driver, Makar reflected on what it means to be respected by those who share the ice with him every night. “Being recognized by your peers is definitely very special,” Makar said. “At the same time, being acknowledged by the media is also meaningful. But there’s something different about your opponents seeing your impact up close and still giving you that nod.”
Makar is in the midst of a remarkable season, having tallied over 90 points for the second consecutive year—something no defenseman has done in over three decades. His elite two-way play, combined with an unmatched hockey IQ and fluid skating, has earned him admiration not just from fans, but from the very players tasked with trying to stop him.

“Honored to be represented at the top by a lot of other guys in the league—that’s for sure,” Makar added. “I hang my hat on how hard I play and being unselfish. I take pride in doing the little things that help a team win.”
In ESPN’s latest mock draft and the NHLPA’s player poll, Makar has emerged as the overwhelming favorite to win his second Norris Trophy. A panel of writers at NHL.com also gave him 14 out of 16 first-place votes, further cementing his place atop the league’s defensive elite.
Makar’s humility and focus on team play continue to be defining traits. While his skill set regularly leads to highlight-reel plays, it’s his consistent effort and leadership that truly earn him the respect of his peers.
The Norris Trophy finalists will be announced later in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the winner being revealed during the NHL Awards following the conclusion of the postseason. But for Makar, the recognition he’s already received from his fellow NHLers may be the most meaningful accolade of all.
