In a move that has taken the baseball world by surprise, the St. Louis Cardinals have acquired veteran All-Star pitcher Drew Pomeranz from the Seattle Mariners, in a trade coordinated by Cardinals President of Baseball Operations and GM John Mozeliak.
With St. Louis aiming to strengthen its pitching staff amid a tightly contested National League Central race, the acquisition of Pomeranz brings experience, depth, and a potential bullpen weapon to the Cardinals’ arsenal. The left-handed pitcher, 36, has had a career filled with highs, including All-Star honors and postseason success, and is now looking for a late-career resurgence in a contending environment.
Pomeranz was pitching in the Mariners’ Triple-A system, making nine appearances and posting a 4.66 ERA this season. Although he hasn’t pitched regularly in the majors since 2021 with the Padres—when he posted a dominant 1.75 ERA across 27 outings—his recent health and improved mechanics have sparked renewed interest across the league.
“We’ve been watching Drew for some time now,” said John Mozeliak. “His veteran leadership, experience in high-leverage situations, and familiarity with playoff atmospheres make him an excellent addition to our staff. Our scouts felt he was trending in the right direction, and we felt now was the time to make a move.”

The deal is said to be a low-cost acquisition for the Cardinals, with Seattle receiving either cash considerations or a low-level prospect in return. The Mariners, looking to make room for younger arms on their major league roster, were reportedly happy to accommodate Pomeranz’s desire to join a contender.
Pomeranz adds valuable left-handed depth to a Cardinals bullpen that has lacked consistency in middle innings. With the Cardinals eyeing a return to October baseball, the front office believes this savvy addition could pay major dividends—especially down the stretch and into the postseason.
St. Louis is expected to ease Pomeranz into action, likely using him as a situational reliever before expanding his role if his performance warrants it.
“He’s been there. He’s done it. You can’t teach that kind of experience,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said after news of the trade broke. “He gives us a different look, and that’s something we’re excited about.”
As the Cardinals continue to build for a playoff push, the addition of Drew Pomeranz reflects a balance between aggressive front-office decision-making and a commitment to fortifying the team without sacrificing the farm system.
