From No-Hitter to Goodbye: Phillies Fan Favorite Big Star Announce Retires After 13 MLB Seasons

Jake Diekman, the fiery left-handed reliever who got his start with the Philadelphia Phillies, has officially announced his retirement from Major League Baseball after a 13-year career.

Originally drafted in the 30th round out of small-town Nebraska, Diekman defied expectations to become a long-time bullpen staple. He made his MLB debut in 2012 at age 25 and quickly became a fan favorite in Philadelphia thanks to his electric pitching and tenacity on the mound.

One of his career highlights came in 2014, when he joined three other pitchers in throwing a combined no-hitter against the Atlanta Braves — a memorable moment etched in Phillies history.

In a heartfelt social media post, Diekman thanked all the teams he played for but gave special appreciation to the Phillies.

“Thank you to the Phillies for taking a shot on a 30th-round guy out of small-town Nebraska that looked like Skeletor,” he wrote. “Making my big league debut with the most veteran team imaginable at that point was surreal. I’ll never forget being part of the 2015 no-hitter.”

Over 13 seasons, Diekman pitched for nine MLB teams, including the Rangers, Royals, Red Sox, and Mets. He finished his career with a 3.91 ERA, 764 strikeouts, and 705 relief appearances.

After his last Major League appearance in 2024 and a spring training stint with the Braves in 2025, Diekman decided to retire, closing a chapter marked by resilience and unforgettable performances.

For Phillies fans, he will always be remembered as more than just a reliever — he was a fighter who made a lasting impact on the game.
