The St. Louis Cardinals have made their move — and it could be the one that turns their season around. In a surprise trade with the Baltimore Orioles, the Cardinals have acquired veteran first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, addressing one of their biggest weaknesses and signaling that they’re serious about contending in 2025.
With the rotation rounding into shape and the bullpen holding its own, the missing piece was clear: consistent production at first base. That issue is no longer on the table.
Ryan Mountcastle Arrives in the Gateway City
Mountcastle, who had been underperforming this season in Baltimore with a slash line of .230/.263/.327 and a career-low 71 OPS+, will get a fresh start in St. Louis. Despite his struggles, the Cardinals believe the 27-year-old still has plenty left in the tank. Over his career, Mountcastle has hovered around a .750 OPS and consistently delivered 20+ home run power when healthy.

“Sometimes all a guy needs is a new environment and a fresh start,” one Cardinals scout said. “We think this is the perfect place for that.”
The move comes at a critical time, as St. Louis has battled injuries and inconsistency at the position. The team has relied on a mix of Brendan Donovan, Alec Burleson, and utility players at first base, but none have brought the power potential Mountcastle offers.
What the Orioles Get in Return
Baltimore receives a package centered around two prospects: a high-upside Double-A pitcher and a flexible infield bat with speed and contact skills. More importantly, this trade opens the door for the Orioles to promote top prospect Coby Mayo or catcher/first baseman Samuel Basallo to full-time duty, aligning with their long-term vision.
Mountcastle was expected to leave Baltimore after the season regardless, making the decision easier for the Orioles front office.
A Statement Trade
For the Cardinals, this isn’t just about numbers — it’s about sending a message. Manager Oli Marmol praised the deal after it became official, saying, “This is the kind of move that tells a clubhouse: we’re here to win. We believe in this group, and we’re giving them the tools to finish strong.”
With the NL Central tightly contested and the Wild Card picture wide open, the addition of Mountcastle could be a game-changer. It also gives the team flexibility, as other position players can now return to their natural spots.
Looking Ahead
St. Louis fans have been waiting for a sign that this team is ready to return to October — and the arrival of Ryan Mountcastle might be exactly that. Whether or not the gamble pays off, one thing is certain: the Cardinals aren’t standing still.
This move may not be the last before the deadline, but it’s the loudest one yet.
