The New York Yankees made a puzzling roster decision ahead of their upcoming weekend series at Fenway Park. While most of the buzz surrounded Max Fried’s much-anticipated start in Boston, the team stunned fans by signing veteran utility player Garrett Hampson to a major-league deal and optioning slugging outfielder Everson Pereira to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Hampson, recently released by the Arizona Diamondbacks after hitting a dismal .167/.359/.167 with no extra-base hits over 18 games, was signed by New York in a move that immediately raised eyebrows. Known more for his speed and defensive flexibility than his bat, Hampson can cover second base, shortstop, and all three outfield positions — something manager Aaron Boone emphasized as a current need.

To make room on the 40-man roster, reliever Scott Effross was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Yankees Prioritize Versatility as Injuries Mount
Boone explained that with players like Anthony Volpe, DJ LeMahieu, and Jasson Domínguez all battling various injuries or coming off limited workloads, Hampson gives the Yankees a “chess piece” to survive the grind.

“Hampson’s a guy who can play six spots and run the bases. That’s something we’re short on right now,” Boone said. “We’re trying to piece things together until we’re fully healthy.”

Still, the move comes at the cost of Pereira, who had provided a power jolt in limited opportunities. Though inconsistent, he represented a rare source of home run potential for a Yankees lineup that has grown more contact-heavy in 2025.
Max Fried Returns, But Lineup Questions Persist
While the return of Max Fried has bolstered a rotation that includes Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón, the offense remains the bigger concern in the Bronx. With Aaron Judge and Juan Soto shouldering much of the load, New York has struggled to find consistency beyond its superstar core.
Hampson’s career slash line of .239/.302/.358 and below-average 69 wRC+ doesn’t suggest he’ll move the needle much at the plate, but the Yankees are banking on situational value and defense.
Yankees Bet on Depth, but Risk Sacrificing Power
With AL East rivals gaining momentum, every move counts — and this one has left fans scratching their heads. If Hampson fails to contribute and Pereira continues to mash in Triple-A, the front office may find itself under the microscope again soon.
For now, the Yankees are leaning on depth and hoping experience and flexibility can carry them through the storm. Whether that gamble pays off is a question only time will answer.
