The Pittsburgh Steelers have pulled off yet another bold move this offseason, acquiring Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith in a surprise trade that reunites him with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

After already making waves in March by trading for star wide receiver DK Metcalf and then dealing George Pickens to the Cowboys ahead of the NFL Draft, the Steelers have now added one of the AFC’s top-performing tight ends from 2024. The trade, confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, sends a mid-round draft pick to Miami in exchange for Smith.

Jonnu Smith Rejoins Arthur Smith in Pittsburgh

This deal marks a reunion between Jonnu Smith and OC Arthur Smith, who previously worked together during Jonnu’s time in both Tennessee and Atlanta. Their strong chemistry appears to have played a key role in the move, as the Steelers look to fast-track their offensive overhaul.

Smith is coming off the best season of his career with the Dolphins. Despite a turbulent year for Miami filled with injuries and quarterback uncertainty, the 28-year-old tight end posted 88 catches for 884 yards and 8 touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. With both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle missing time, Smith became a reliable focal point in Miami’s passing game.

Built at 6-foot-3, 248 pounds, Smith brings toughness and versatility to Pittsburgh. Known for his ability to block, run after the catch, and find soft spots in the defense, he gives the Steelers a multi-dimensional threat who already understands the nuances of Arthur Smith’s playbook.

Steelers Reinforce Offense Around DK Metcalf

While Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington remain in the tight end rotation, Jonnu Smith is expected to take on a significant role immediately. His familiarity with the system and recent production make him a key piece in Pittsburgh’s plan to surround DK Metcalf with dependable targets.

The Steelers’ aggressive approach this offseason signals their clear intention to compete in a loaded AFC. With Metcalf and now Smith added to the mix, Pittsburgh’s offense suddenly looks much more dangerous—and Arthur Smith’s system finally has the pieces he needs to make it thrive.

This move is yet another example of GM Omar Khan’s commitment to bold, calculated risks as the Steelers aim to climb back into serious playoff contention.
