Just a day before the 2025 NHL Draft, the Chicago Blackhawks made a calculated move to strengthen their roster, acquiring veteran forward Frederick Gaudreau from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a fourth-round pick (No. 102 overall). The trade, first reported by hockey insider Frank Seravalli, adds a seasoned presence to a young Chicago team eager to turn a corner in its rebuilding process.
Gaudreau, 32, has built a reputation as a reliable two-way center known for his defensive responsibility, penalty-killing ability, and leadership on and off the ice. During the 2024-25 season with Minnesota, he tallied 18 goals and 37 total points, helping the Wild reach the postseason once again. His versatility and veteran experience made him a valuable piece in the Wild’s lineup since joining them in the 2021-22 season.
For the Blackhawks, who are in the early stages of reshaping their identity around rising stars like Connor Bedard, the addition of Gaudreau brings much-needed balance. While Chicago only managed 31 wins last season and finished near the bottom of the Western Conference, this trade signals a shift in mindset—one focused on building a support system around their young core.
Team executives believe Gaudreau can immediately stabilize the bottom six forward group while also mentoring the younger talent both on and off the ice. His presence should also boost the Blackhawks’ penalty kill, which ranked near the bottom of the league last season.

On the other side, the Minnesota Wild free up roster space and add a mid-round pick to their draft stockpile, giving them greater flexibility heading into the offseason. With a solid 45-win campaign in 2024-25 and a fourth-place finish in the competitive Central Division, Minnesota appears focused on maintaining playoff contention while also refreshing their depth chart.
Though not a headline-grabbing transaction, the Blackhawks’ move to acquire Frederick Gaudreau could prove to be a smart, stabilizing step in what they hope will be a more competitive 2025-26 campaign.
