Iga Swiatek criticized by rival over Wimbledon bathroom break in upset defeat
Yulia Putintseva was not impressed with Iga Swiatek after defeating the world No.1 in the Wimbledon third round and claimed she was “bored” by the top seed.
Following her victory over world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in their third-round Wimbledon match, Yulia Putintseva complained about being bored during what she perceived to be the world’s best player’s protracted bathroom breaks.
Even though her opponent made it to the fourth round, Putintseva was not happy with her because she thought she was taking too long off the court in between points. When asked if her rapid movement was a planned tactic because of the lengthy waits, the celebrity gave her take on the match and her opponent’s actions. She also liked a smooth transition between sets.
Quite frankly, not at all. She took a lot of time off the court, so I wasn’t too annoyed. I’m not aware of the regulations. She simply went to use the restroom. She remarked, “I have no idea what transpired or how many minutes she was taking. “To be honest, I got rather bored at one point. I went as if she was about to arrive. Then I realized she wasn’t there and started moving. Moving again, she’s nowhere in sight. I was starting to grow bored.”
“After that, I was ecstatic about the third set since I was playing so well. I decided to give it a try. I wasn’t intentionally rushing. To be honest, I don’t think I take too long when I play my service game. I never reach for anything, even a towel. I’m simply leaving.”
Putintseva comes into her match against Swiatek on a high note after winning a grass-court championship in Birmingham and winning big at Wimbledon against Angelique Kerber and Katerina Siniakova. In her own words, Putintseva said of her performance, “I mean, it’s good.”
It’s excellent. It’s really significant,” she went on. “To be honest, I think I deserve it because I’ve played well the entire year. I’ve had bad luck in games when I lost by the narrowest of margins.” Her tenacity and resolve are incredibly motivating.
However, I was quite concentrated today and decided that I would take it this time. I’m really pleased with myself for stepping up and finishing the task.” Tension has existed between Putintseva and Swiatek since an incident at Indian Wells earlier this year in which Swiatek objected to Putintseva’s moves while she was getting ready to serve.
Since then, Putintseva has clarified that she has no personal relationship to Swiatek, saying, “No, I don’t know her,” and going on to say, “I mean, I don’t know.” She never seems to be in her element with her squad, at least not from what I can observe. She is a reclusive person. Really, I’m not going to get inside that bubble.”
Putintseva’s perseverance and talent on the court have contributed to her remarkable career on the WTA Tour. She has won two WTA Tour singles championships, the Budapest Grand Prix in 2021 and the Nuremberg Cup in 2019. She has also made notable progress in Grand Slam competitions, having advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open in 2020 and the French Open twice in 2016 and 2018.
