Just In: Official Mavericks, agree a lucrative deal with a talented player.

The Dallas Mavericks added Klay Thompson and Naji Marshall to their roster this offseason to offer some depth, but they went to a familiar face to provide leadership and positive energy in the locker room.

Shams Charania of The Athletic, who verified the information with Markieff Morris’ agent, reported that the Mavericks and the player have agreed to a one-year contract for Morris to rejoin the organization.

Morris, 35, played 26 games for the Mavericks last season providing deep bench support. He averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game and demonstrated his ability to be a big, strong player when needed to make 3-pointers.

He has a great relationship with Kyrie Irving and provided the club with experienced leadership in the locker room,

which was crucial during its run to the Finals. This is a man who was virtually another coach for Dallas, a player who occasionally conducted pregame and timeout talks, and a player who approached players on the floor to provide advice. The Mavericks want a player like that back for a potential postseason run.

Other than the fact that the Mavericks could only give the veteran minimum, we are unaware of the specifics of Morris’ contract.Dallas already has 14 guaranteed contracts, plus a partially guaranteed one at $2.1 million with A.J. Lawson. Should Morris’ contract be guaranteed, the Mavericks would have to cut Lawson or one of the guaranteed contracts as they have completed their roster.
