Six-time All-Star and former MVP reveals retirement plans ahead of farewell season
CINCINNATI — In a heartfelt announcement that sent waves through the baseball world, one of the most iconic players in Cincinnati Reds history has revealed that the upcoming 2025 season will be his last.
Joey Votto, the veteran first baseman and longtime face of the franchise, announced his intention to retire at the conclusion of the season during a press conference at Great American Ball Park on Friday.
“After a lot of reflection and conversations with my family and teammates, I’ve decided that the 2025 season will be my final one,” Votto said. “It’s been an incredible ride, and I want to enjoy every last moment of this year.”
A six-time All-Star, Gold Glove winner, and the 2010 National League MVP, Votto has long been considered one of the game’s premier hitters. Known for his elite plate discipline, career .409 on-base percentage, and nearly 2,100 career hits, his legacy is already cemented in both Reds history and across Major League Baseball.

Although he briefly played for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2024, Votto’s return to Cincinnati in 2025 was embraced as a proper final act. Reds fans will now have the opportunity to celebrate his career throughout the season in what is shaping up to be an emotional farewell tour.
“He’s one of the greatest to ever wear the uniform,” said Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall. “This final season will be about honoring everything he’s given to this city and this team.”
Votto emphasized that his focus remains on contributing during the season, but acknowledged how meaningful the farewell will be.
“I love this game and this city more than words can express,” he said. “This season, I’m going to take it all in—every cheer, every at-bat, every road trip. And when it’s over, I’ll walk away with no regrets.”
