HUGE BOOST: 49ers Bolster Special Teams with Signing of Super Bowl-Winning, Pro Bowl Punter

The San Francisco 49ers have made another noteworthy addition this offseason, bringing in veteran punter Thomas Morstead—a former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion—as they continue fine-tuning their roster ahead of the 2025 campaign.

NFL insider Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team first reported the signing, with Morstead later confirming the news himself via social media, posting a photo outside Levi’s Stadium and expressing his excitement with the caption: “grateful is an understatement!”

Morstead, 38, is widely regarded as one of the most dependable punters of his era. He spent the bulk of his career with the New Orleans Saints, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2012 and helping the franchise secure a Super Bowl victory in the 2009 season. Most recently, he played for the New York Jets, where he continued to deliver consistent performances despite a rocky season for the team overall.

Though the relationship between a punter and the defensive coordinator is rarely pivotal, it’s worth noting that Morstead reunites—at least within the same organization—with former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who has joined the 49ers as defensive coordinator this year.

The signing comes as the 49ers work to address every layer of their depth chart. With quarterback Brock Purdy now under a long-term deal and several high-profile extensions on the books, San Francisco is solidifying the less flashy parts of its team—like special teams—that are critical in close contests.

Following a 2024 season marred by injuries and missed postseason hopes, the 49ers are determined to return to Super Bowl contention. Morstead’s arrival provides stability in the punting unit and underscores the team’s commitment to strengthening every facet of the game.

As the offseason progresses, all eyes remain on what further strategic moves San Francisco’s front office might make to ensure the team is ready to challenge the NFL’s elite once again.
