Midway through the season, the Raiders fired Josh McDaniels and promoted Antonio Pierce, a former linebacker coach. While there was definitely room for growth under Coach Pierce’s direction last season, the Raiders played with a lot more fervor and urgency than they had before his elevation. He would help steady a club that was headed nowhere quickly.
Pierce had been a high school and university coach, but he had not had a head coaching position in a professional capacity. For Pierce, the final nine games of the previous season served as a crash lesson on how to be an NFL head coach. In the second half of the previous season, Pierce led the Raiders to a 5-4 record; he was just a few unfortunate breaks away from leading the team to a 6-3 or perhaps 7-2 finish. Still, in the NFL, almost everything isn’t considered.
Pierce got right to work this summer, removing the interim tag as soon as possible and addressing as many of the issues from the previous campaign as he could. Pierce needed the Raiders’ roster and coaching staff to change drastically if he was going to make major progress toward the playoffs in the upcoming season, let alone get close. He recently shared some of the most important lessons he’s learned since taking the helm as an NFL head coach.
“Be patient,” Pierce uttered. Take your time making decisions. Avoid becoming overly emotional as this will lead to many poor decisions. Ultimately, simply take a seat, process, and realize that this is what training camp is all about.
“These guys have come together and formed a team over the course of six pad practices. Let’s be sincere. Not even our entire roster is here yet. A few of our people are on the [List of Physically Unable to Perform]. Thus, just practice patience. Not hurrying, not overreacting, and—above all—trying hard to shut off the outside world and concentrate just on our team.
Pierce will definitely rely on the lessons he learned in the second half of the previous season and his first offseason as head coach to get him through the upcoming one as he starts his first complete season as an NFL coach. The future looks bright for the Raiders if he is as much of a student of the game as a coach as he was a player.
